Why Is My Wi-Fi Slow in Some Rooms? (Especially in Brick Homes)

By Nathan Hays · LBK Home Tech Solutions

If your phone shows full bars in the living room but crawls in the back bedroom, you're not imagining it. Wi-Fi is radio, and some things in a house are very good at blocking radio signals. A lot of homes in Lubbock and the South Plains have exactly those things.

The usual suspects

  • Brick and masonry walls. Interior brick, stone fireplaces and masonry weaken Wi-Fi far more than ordinary drywall.
  • Router placement. A router tucked in a cabinet, behind the TV or at one end of the house leaves the far rooms with a weak signal.
  • Distance and long, single-story layouts. Wi-Fi gets weaker with every wall and every few feet it travels.
  • Older equipment. An older router — especially the one your internet provider gave you years ago — may not keep up with today's phones, TVs and cameras.
  • Too many devices. Streaming TVs, phones, doorbells and smart speakers all share the same connection.

What actually helps

1. Move the router. The closer it is to the middle of the home, up off the floor and out in the open, the better. This alone sometimes solves the problem for free.

2. Use a mesh system or access points. In larger or brick homes, one router often isn't enough. A mesh system places two or three units around the house so every room is close to one.

3. Wire what you can. A TV or computer that doesn't move can often be connected with a cable, freeing up Wi-Fi for everything else.

4. Check your internet plan. Sometimes the Wi-Fi is fine and the plan itself is too slow for how many people and devices are in the home.

Skip the guesswork

Buying a bigger router doesn't always fix the problem — and sometimes the fix costs nothing. We'll test speeds room by room, find what's actually getting in the way, and recommend only what makes a difference.
