Most people who upgrade their TV say the same thing a month later: they wish they'd gone bigger. Today's 4K TVs look sharp up close, so the right size depends mostly on one thing — how far you sit from the screen.
Step 1: Measure from your seat to the wall
Sit where you usually watch and measure to the wall where the TV will go. Then use this chart as a starting point:
| Seat to screen | Good TV size |
|---|---|
| About 6 feet | 50″ to 55″ |
| About 7 feet | 55″ to 65″ |
| About 8 feet | 65″ to 75″ |
| About 9 feet | 75″ to 85″ |
| 10 feet or more | 85″ and up |
If you mostly watch sports and movies, lean toward the bigger end. If the TV is mostly for news and background, the smaller end is fine.
Step 2: Check that it fits the wall
TV sizes are measured corner to corner, so the TV is wider than you might think. Roughly:
- 55″ TV: about 48″ wide and 27″ tall
- 65″ TV: about 57″ wide and 32″ tall
- 75″ TV: about 65″ wide and 37″ tall
- 85″ TV: about 74″ wide and 42″ tall
Easy trick: tape the outline on the wall with painter’s tape and live with it for a day. You’ll know quickly if it feels too big or too small.
Step 3: Get the height right
For most living rooms, the center of the screen should be close to eye level when you’re seated, usually around 40 to 45 inches from the floor. Mounting higher is common, but it can be hard on your neck during a long movie.
Over the fireplace?
It’s a popular spot, but it puts the TV higher than ideal, and heat from the fireplace matters. A tilting or pull-down mount helps with the viewing angle. Check your TV maker’s guidance on heat, and feel the wall above the mantel when the fireplace is running.
Thinking about 90 inches or bigger?
Very large TVs are heavier and harder to handle, need a sturdier mount, and often take two people to lift. Make sure you can get it through the door and up the stairs, and that the wall can hold it. We price 90″ and larger TVs separately for that reason.
