Mounting a TV Over a Fireplace: What Lubbock Homeowners Should Know

By Nathan Hays · LBK Home Tech Solutions

The wall above the fireplace is often the only spot in the living room that faces the couch, so it’s one of the most common places people want their TV. It can look great. A few things are worth thinking through first.

1. Viewing height

The biggest complaint about TVs over a fireplace is a sore neck. Most mantels put the bottom of the TV well above eye level. A tilting mount angles the screen down toward the couch, and a drop-down (mantel) mount lets you pull the TV down to eye level when you’re watching. If the mantel is very tall, we’ll talk through whether a drop-down mount makes sense.

2. Heat

Check your TV’s manual for its operating temperature, and hold your hand on the wall above the mantel after the fireplace has run for a while. If it’s too hot to keep your hand there, it’s too hot for the TV. A deep mantel helps by pushing heat away from the wall. Gas logs that are only lit a few times a winter are rarely a problem.

3. Brick, stone and tile

Lots of Lubbock fireplaces are brick or stone. That’s actually a strong wall for a TV, as long as it’s drilled with the right bits and anchored into solid masonry rather than mortar joints alone. Ceramic tile takes extra care so it doesn’t crack.

4. Hiding the cords

Cords dangling down the bricks are what make a fireplace install look unfinished. Over drywall, an in-wall power kit hides the power cord and cables inside the wall. Over brick or stone, we’ll find the cleanest option for your wall, like a paintable cord cover or running the cables to the side.

5. What it costs

TV mounting starts at $119 for TVs 89 inches and smaller ($149 with setup). Over a fireplace adds $79, and a brick or stone wall adds $79. Prices are for labor, the mount isn’t included, and there’s no travel charge inside Lubbock city limits. See the full list on our pricing page.
