Mounting a TV? 6 Things to Check First

By Nathan Hays · LBK Home Tech Solutions

A wall-mounted TV looks great when it's done right — and frustrating when it's crooked, too high, or has cables dangling below it. A little planning up front makes all the difference.

1. What's the wall made of?

Drywall over wood studs, brick, stone and masonry all need different anchors and techniques. Mounting into the right spot is what keeps a TV safely on the wall.

2. How high should it go?

For most rooms, the center of the screen should be close to eye level when you're seated. Higher placements are common, but they can be hard on the neck during long movies.

3. Above the fireplace?

It's a popular spot, but it's usually higher than ideal, and heat matters. A tilting or pull-down mount can help, and it's worth checking your TV maker's guidance about heat.

4. Where will the cables go?

Decide how you want to handle power and HDMI cables — a clean cover on the wall, or routing them so they're out of sight.

5. Is there power nearby?

Check where the nearest outlet is and plan for your soundbar and streaming devices too.

6. Fixed, tilting or full-motion mount?

Fixed mounts sit flattest. Tilting mounts help with higher placement. Full-motion mounts let you angle the screen toward different seats.
